The device setup related messages are found in Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log - errors here are not shown in the dec ctp setup gui after the failure happens (probably will be later), so at first I was given some totally unrelated error message (caused by the setup not having a clue about crashes occuring during the device install) and spent a good while looking at wrong place for the problem.
